In 2012, Marvel Studios brought out its key team The Avengers for a memorable Super Bowl trailer. Thirteen years later, it brought out a less polished team, The Thunderbolts, made up of the studio’s villains and antiheroes.
“Everyone deserves a second shot” is the tagline for the feature, which Marvel describes this way with its logline: “Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”
The feature stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The slew of MCU newcomers also join the franchise, including Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Edward Pierce.
Along with the Super Bowl spot, Marvel revealed that the band Son Lux will score Thunderbolts*. The band is known for their Oscar-nominated work on best picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once.
The film hails from director Jake Schreier and is produced by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek and Jason Tamez executive produce.
Thunderbolts arrives on May 2, one of three features Marvel will release this year, including Captain America: Brave New World (Feb. 14) and Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25).
